Description
Alfie attends a signing class weekly purely for enjoyment and enjoys lots of the fun singing involved. His Mum loves to make him smile and uses ‘sweet treats’ as a way of doing this. This book can open discussions about good and bad food habits.
This is the first in ten stories about Alfie’s life. Each story will cover a different event, for example, holidays, Christmas, challenges and dramas. Alfie’s life like everyone, will have its ups and downs. During these events, Alfie’s story will include, determination to achieve a goal, parent’s separation, as well as the silly events that he will remember forever and learning important life skills.
My vision for these books started many years ago in 2011. I was working for the Palliative care team and we had little resources for giving help and advice. Many people in the team were disappointed at the lack of resources for these children and the children themselves were upset at the lack of emotion in some of these leaflets. I decided that enough was enough and if we couldn’t find anything better than the dusty cupboard with leaflets not actually appropriate for such sensitive issues, then I would just have to write something nice myself.
My original vision has never changed, but has expanded over the years, through seeing all the different people who have enjoyed the stories and how differently they have been used. Ultimately, the books, as well as being lovely, fun, standalone stories with the intention of being an enjoyable read, have the capacity to open up often taboo subjects and make them feel less scary. They can let children know that we are all different and experience different hurdles in our lives, that may present tough challenges or feel emotionally tough, but that that is ok.
Through discussing more taboo subjects openly, allowing questions to be asked and giving children the chance to either hear about other children like themselves or about children who are different, but still enjoy the same hobbies or life dramas, I hope that there would be a decrease in incidences of bullying and growth in acceptance. These books do not set out to change the world, but they do aim to help it to be a little less scary for our children and give them the knowledge of others around them. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.
